Continuing Education

Important Reminder for all Licensed Members of the PEIVMA

PEIVMA Continuing Education Policy

According to bylaw 18.1, all licensed members of the PEIVMA must obtain at least twenty (20) hours of continuing education every two calendar years. A record of this CE must be submitted annually, regardless of the CE activity taken by the member the previous year. Even those members who qualify for an exemption (see below) must submit their form indicating why they are exempt.

Acceptable continuing education within the PEIVMA is any formal veterinary related lecture, lab or seminar where the speaker is a veterinarian or the sponsoring organization is veterinary in nature. Also, on-line CE is acceptable if it is sponsored by a veterinary group, has a method of assessment to ensure completion of the material, and issues a certificate to that end. RACE (Registry of Approved Continuing Education with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards) approved on-line courses are preferred. If you are in doubt as to whether or not your planned CE fits the PEIVMA policy, please do not hesitate to contact a member of council for approval prior to attendance.

New graduates are exempt from the above bylaw when applying for membership/licensure within the first two years of graduation from an accredited college. However, at the time of their membership/licence renewal two years post graduation, they are required to have accumulated the necessary twenty hours.

Individuals applying for new membership/license from a jurisdiction where there was no mandatory requirement for continuing education will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the licensing board. They may be required to obtain CE deemed suitable by the licensing board before being granted a licence.

MEDIA RELEASE

LIFELEARN INC. LAUNCHES COMMUNICATION MATTERS CD-ROM

VETERINARY TEAM TRAINING PROGRAM

Lifelearn is pleased to announce the release of Communication Matters authored by

Dr. Cindy Adams PhD, MSW. This interactive educational program is the latest CD in a series on customer service within the veterinary team training product line. The program was sponsored by Medi-Cal/Royal Canin Veterinary Diets.

Communication Matters helps you and your staff to develop effective clinical communication. Differing from interpersonal communication, clinical communication is evidence based and is intentionally used at particular times during a medical interview for specific reasons. Successful clinical communication pays back with greater team satisfaction, positive performance reviews and best possible outcomes for patients and their care givers.

Communication Matters uses the Calgary Cambridge Guide as a framework to promoting collaborative partnerships between the client and the veterinary professional. The guide details the steps involved in the medical interview and the clinical communication skills required during each step of the interview. The program is highly interactive with video, audio and text-based scenarios and exercises in applying the most essential communication skills that will aid all members of the team in dealing with clients.

After completing the program the veterinary team will:

1. Understand the benefits of effective communication

2. Recognize and discriminate between different styles of communication

3. Apply effective communication skills to a variety of situations that may occur in the veterinary practice

4. Integrate veterinary skills and knowledge with communication or process skills

5. Develop and set goals for ongoing development of communication within the practice
